How to add the Exa MCP server to Claude Code

Sign-in: No sign-in. Paste the URL and it connects.
Our hands-on result: Partial 4 of 6 tasks passed, tested Oct 16, 2026 with MCP TypeScript SDK (reference client).

Claude Code setup

claude mcp add --transport http exa https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp

1. Run the command, then run claude mcp get exa to confirm it connected.

We ran the hands-on test in a reference client, not in Claude Code. This config follows Claude Code's documented format for remote (Streamable HTTP) servers. If it fails for you, tell us and we will retest.

Known problems and fixes

• MCP tool results too large: context window blown by one call
• MCP search returns results for nonsense queries
• MCP server accepts calls missing a required field
