How to add the Paper Search (Smithery) MCP server to ChatGPT
Server URL: https://paper-search-mcp-openai--adamamer20.run.tools
Sign-in: We tested it with an API key sent in the api_key query parameter of the URL (a Bearer header was rejected in our test). Treat the full URL as a secret.
Our hands-on result: Partial 12 of 15 tasks passed, tested Oct 17, 2026 with MCP TypeScript SDK (reference client).
ChatGPT setup
https://paper-search-mcp-openai--adamamer20.run.tools?api_key=YOUR_SMITHERY_API_KEY- Open Plugins on chatgpt.com, click the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. On some plans you first turn on Developer mode under Settings.
- Name it ai-smithery-adamamer20-paper-search-mcp-openai and enter the URL: https://paper-search-mcp-openai--adamamer20.run.tools?api_key=YOUR_SMITHERY_API_KEY
- Set authentication to none; the key is in the URL.
- Tick the risk acknowledgement, create it, then start a new chat and pick it with @.
We ran the hands-on test in a reference client, not in ChatGPT. This config follows ChatGPT's documented format for remote (Streamable HTTP) servers. If it fails for you, tell us and we will retest.
